Cabinet in San Manuel, AZ

San Manuel exists because of a copper mine, and it is still standing after the mine closed, which is more than plenty of Arizona towns can say. Del E.

Webb Construction Company built the entire community in 1953 as a company town for the new San Manuel mine, mill and smelter complex, Webb being the same builder who later put up Sun City. The 2020 census counted 3,114 residents.

BHP shut both the mine and the smelter in June 1999, taking about 2,500 jobs with them, and the operation closed permanently in 2003. Veterans Memorial Boulevard carried State Route 76 from 1962 to 1988, linking the town to State Route 77, and an extension called the Benson-Mammoth Highway was started and abandoned in the early 1970s.

The housing is the interesting part for our trade. Hundreds of homes built at once, to a handful of plans, by a single builder, in 1953 and 1954. Small footprints, eight-foot ceilings, one bathroom in the original plans, and kitchens laid out for a family that ate at home every night.

Building cabinets in a company town is a different exercise, because once you have measured one 1953 plan you have effectively measured forty houses. We keep the dimensions on file.

The original kitchens here run about eight to eleven linear feet of upper cabinet, with a 36-inch sink base under a window and a run that stops dead at a doorway. There is no room to get clever, and the common mistake is forcing an island into a room that is nine feet wide.

What genuinely improves these houses is going frameless to recover the width the face frame was eating, running the uppers to the ceiling instead of stopping at 30 inches, and putting a full-height pantry where the old broom closet stood.

A San Manuel kitchen done properly lands between $9,000 and $16,000 including counters, and if somebody quotes you far past that in this town, ask them why. These houses were built to a budget on purpose and they have held up better than most things built since.

Cabinet work we do in San Manuel, AZ

Gilbert Elite Cabinets covers the same range of work in San Manuel that we do in Gilbert — nothing is carved out because the address is a few miles up the road:

  • Home Office & Built-InsHome office built-ins turn the flex room every Gilbert floor plan includes into a room that actually works, usually for less than people expect. A wall of built-in desk, file drawers, and shelving runs $4,000 to $12,000 depending on length and finish, and unlike furniture it uses the full height of a nine or ten foot ceiling instead of stopping at 72 inches.
  • Entertainment Centers & Media WallsEntertainment centers and media walls are the built-in most often designed around a television that will be replaced in four years, which is the single mistake worth avoiding at the drawing stage. The media walls we build across Gilbert hide the equipment, deal with heat and cabling properly, and are dimensioned so the next screen still fits without anyone opening drywall.
  • Laundry Room CabinetsLaundry room cabinets are the cheapest room in the house to fix and the one most people put off for a decade. A typical Gilbert laundry room gets a folding counter, uppers that reach the ceiling, a tall broom cabinet, and a pull-out hamper for $2,500 to $6,000, and it changes a chore you do four times a week.
  • Pantry SystemsWalk-in pantry cabinets are the single highest-return project in a Gilbert kitchen, because almost every house built here since 1998 has a walk-in pantry and almost none of them were finished properly. The builder hangs five runs of wire shelving, calls it done, and you spend the next fifteen years excavating for a can of chickpeas behind the slow cooker.
  • Cabinet Refacing, Refinishing & PaintingCabinet refacing, refinishing, and painting is the right call in more Gilbert kitchens than any cabinet shop wants to admit, because the town's housing stock is young. A kitchen built in 2004 with plywood carcasses and dated oak doors gets a genuinely new look for $4,000 to $10,000 instead of $20,000-plus, and it takes about a week rather than a month.
  • Cabinet Hardware & OrganizersCabinet hardware and organizers are the cheapest upgrade in a Gilbert kitchen and the one you touch two hundred times a day. New pulls, new soft-close hinges, and four or five well-chosen inserts usually land between $600 and $2,500 for a full kitchen, and the difference is immediate in a way a new backsplash is not.
